Boehner takes gavel as Speaker of the House on party-line vote

Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) was sworn in as the 53rd Speaker of the House and pledged to run a humble Republican majority that aimed “to give government back to the people.”

Boehner, 61, accepted the Speaker’s gavel from Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) shortly after 2 p.m., wiping tears from his eyes as he assumed control of the House.
