FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after the House passed approved H.R. 1586 the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act which the Senate passed on August 5. The House reconvened this week to take up the bill which will save and create almost 320,000 jobs – including 161,000 teachers and preventing the layoffs of tens of thousands of police officers, firefighters, and nurses. The legislation is estimated to save 2,600 teaching jobs and provide an additional $138 million to reduce Medicaid shortfalls in South Carolina.

“Americans are still suffering from the impact of the failed policies of the Bush administration and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. This bill will save and create almost 320,000 jobs, including first responders and 160,000 teachers, by closing tax loopholes that send American jobs overseas. Not only is the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act paid-for, it reduces the deficit by $1.4 billion over 10 years. Keeping American jobs at home and saving the jobs of our teachers, cops and firefighters is important, and it will help keep our communities safe and keep classroom sizes from getting too big.

“Unfortunately Republicans chose to stand with special interests and corporations which send American jobs overseas, rather than fighting for the best interests of the American people. Republicans want to return to the failed policies of the past, but with this bill, we will continue to move America forward.”
