CLYBURN STATEMENT ON BLACK HISTORY MONTH
WASHINGTON, DC—Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn today issued the following statement in recognition of Black History Month.
“Black History Month is a time, to not only celebrate the vast and valuable contributions of those who seized the moment to meet the challenges of their day; it’s a time to figure out how we can contribute ourselves.
“We are all products of our environment. The challenges in front of us and our communities are each a call to step forward and find solutions. George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker, Shirley Ann Jackson and Ronald McNair didn’t have access to a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program in school, yet they exceeded expectations becoming experts in their fields of science, math and physics.
“My dad often chided and challenged me to not waste time cursing the darkness, light a candle. So this year, don’t just celebrate Black History Month, find your own way to create it.”
