Mark Levin Attacks Michael Savage Over Gingrich Offer; Raises Question of Legality of Savage’s Actions

Story by Talkers Magazine

In response to Talk Radio Network star Michael Savage’s offer of $1 million to Newt Gingrich to drop out of the GOP race for the presidential nomination, Cumulus Media Networks talk host Mark Levin broadcast an offer to Savage to quit his radio program for good for the sum of $100,000.

Now, clearly Levin is toying with Savage in the spirit of a good old fashioned radio war – according to the Daily Caller, he stated on his program, “Let me tell you, that’s extremely generous on my part because he’s already going nowhere…That’s right — he’s losing affiliates left and right. That’s what happens when you take your audience for granted and take your affiliates for granted.”

But Levin also asked if Savage’s offer to Gingrich was a “legal bribe.” This raises the question of federal election laws and whether Savage’s offer could be interpreted as tampering with an election.

Other aspects of this, such as whether Savage could claim it was a radio stunt or that no one would reasonably expect Gingrich to accept the offer may or may not be relevant. Remember, the feds often don’t care whether a particular act is intended as a joke or not.

As far as TALKERS can determine, Savage has only made the offer to Gingrich via his website and not on his TRN show but as far as the FEC is concerned, that may not make a difference regarding Savage’s liability.  TRN, however, would likely remain innocent of wrongdoing if this matter stays off its program.
