Opie & Anthony host fired for Twitter comments.

Since joining SiriusXM Radio in 2004, “Opie & Anthony” hosts Gregg Hughes and Anthony Cumia have on a near-daily basis used language that would draw a fine to a broadcast station. But it’s what Cumia said off-air on Twitter that’s led to his firing. Now the 53-year old personality says he’s considering his next move.

“There’s plenty of options in this day and age,” he told the New York Daily News following his dismissal. The trouble began for Cumia last week when he used his smartphone to snap some photos of a woman in Times Square. She took offense and according to Cumia the woman whacked him a half dozen times. The radio host responded with words — posting her picture on Twitter using racially-charged language.

With a controversy bubbling up on the internet, the satellite radio company axed the host who made an estimated $3 million per year. In a statement, SiriusXM says the decision was after a “careful consideration” of the “racially-charged and hate-filled remarks” used by Cumia. “Those remarks and postings are abhorrent to SiriusXM, and his behavior is wholly inconsistent with what SiriusXM represents,” the company says.

Cumia reacted to his firing calling a “bizarre world” where he was fired for something that “wasn’t even on the air and wasn’t illegal.” He also encouraged people on social media to cancel their subscriptions.

The last time Opie & Anthony made such headlines was when CBS Radio fired the pair in 2002 after they encouraged listeners to have sex inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. The FCC issued a $357,000 fine against CBS.

SiriusXM hasn’t said whether Hughes will continue to host the show solo.
