Labor Day brings a slew of format flips.
story by Inside Radio
Long holiday weekends are fertile ground for planting new formats and Labor Day was no exception. In Atlanta, Clear Channel dropped its classic country “Legend 96.7” WWLG format to give rhythmic AC “Groove 105.7” WWVA a simulcast at 96.7 and directing country fans to country sister “94.9 The Bull” WUBL
In Denver, Max Broadcast Group’s one year old talker “The Truth” KTNI-FM has flipped to urban oldies as “Jammin’ 101.5.” After a week of stunting as “All-Beatles 107.3,” Convergent Broadcasting’s AC “Star 107.3” KRSR, Corpus Christi launched adult hits “107.3 Jake FM.”
In Minnesota, Red Rock Radio’s AC “92.1 Lite FM” WWAX, Duluth segued to hot AC as “New 92.” It was the second format change in Duluth in the past week with Midwest Communications’ conversion of classic rock KHQG (102.5) to CHR as KDWZ.
Heading into the holiday weekend Clear Channel flipped rhythmic CHR “Hot 93.9” KIKI, Honolulu to a Hawaiian-influenced, rhythmic-only version of the company’s Gen X format as “93.9 Jamz” KHJZ. The KIKI calls have been shuttled over to talk KHBZ (990). The previous Hot 93.9 format gets an HD side channel at 93.9-HD2. “It’s a new format featuring the ol’ skool music Generation X grew up with and certainly not their mom’s old school tunes,” Clear Channel Radio Hawaii PD Jamie Hyatt says.
Back on the East Coast, Millennium adult standards “The Memories Station” WOBM, Monmouth-Ocean, NJ (1160) segued to “Good Time Oldies” in a simulcast with former sports sister WADB (1310). The station also has a new lineup, led by “Bob & Marianne In The Morning.”
Midwest used the weekend to launch classic hits “The Drive” in place of its AC WROE-WRQE, Appleton-Oshkosh, WI simulcast (94.3 and 99.7) under new calls WYDR and WZDR. In tandem, classic rock sister WOZZ (93.5) flipped to “93 Rock.
