Attorney General Eric Holder (photo left) told an audience at a local church on Saturday that he is “dissatisfied” with the high levels of gang membership, incarceration and gun violence.
“I am dissatisfied that more than 1.5 million American children have a parent behind bars, and that the majority of America’s kids – more than 60 percent of them – have been exposed to crime, abuse, and violence,” said Holder to the congregation of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
Holder was speaking as part of the church’s annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would have celebrated his 82nd birthday today. Holder, the first African-American attorney general, said though he was not satisfied, he was also encouraged by seeing the persevering spirit of King in the civic leaders of D.C. today.
“But I am also hopeful,” he said. “Occasions like this - and rooms filled with dedicated, determined partners - make me optimistic about the road ahead.”
