Chairwoman Maloney Announces Intent to Subpoena Dan Snyder

Washington D.C. (June 22, 2022)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, announced her intent to issue a subpoena to Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Commanders, for a Committee deposition. Chairwoman Maloney made the announcement during today’s hearing to examine the hostile workplace culture at the Washington Commanders and the NFL’s handling of these issues. The subpoena follows Mr. Snyder’s continued and unfounded refusal to provide voluntary testimony on allegations of harassment and other misconduct within his team.

“Mr. Snyder’s refusal to testify sends a clear signal that he is more concerned about protecting himself than coming clean to the American public. IF THE NFL IS UNWILLNING to hold Mr. Snyder accountable, then I am prepared to do so,” Chairwoman Maloney said at today’s hearing. “The Committee will not be deterred in its investigation to uncover the truth of workplace misconduct at the Washington Commanders.”

On June 1, 2022, the Committee sent letters to Mr. Snyder and Mr. Goodell requesting their appearance at today’s hearing. Mr. Goodell agreed to appear, but Mr. Snyder refused to provide voluntary testimony.

On June 17, 2022, Chairwoman Maloney sent a second letter to Mr. Snyder urging him to attend and offering several accommodations requested by Mr. Snyder. Despite these accommodations, he refused to appear before the Committee.

Today, the Chairwoman released a memo and transcripts from witness depositions and interviews detailing additional findings from the Committee’s investigation. The memo describes new evidence uncovered by the Committee that sheds light on Mr. Snyder’s role in creating that hostile work environment and his efforts to obstruct the NFL’s internal investigation by silencing, intimidating, and harassing former employees. These actions were part of a shadow investigation to discredit his accusers and influence the outcome of the investigation. The memo also outlines new evidence showing that the NFL failed to preserve the independence of its investigation.
