Story by WUSA-TV Washington DC

A woman who used to work at XM Satellite Radio was sentenced to more than a year in prison for helping embezzle more than $900,000 from her former employer.

Fifty-four-year-old Valencia Person of Suitland, Md., was sentenced on Thursday. Person pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

After she serves her time, she will be placed on three years of supervised release. Person also agreed to a money judgment of $908,924, representing the amount of proceeds from the crime.

Person worked at XM Satellite Radio (now known as Sirius XM Radio, Inc.), as a coordinator in the Accounts Payable Department. Her duties included taking care of payments to large vendors. From 2005 until at least 2008, Person and an XM Satellite Radio Accounts Payable Administrator embezzled nearly $909,000 from the company, diverting at least 26 payments to bank accounts held by Jones. They altered data in the accounting system to cover up their crime. Jones then gave part of the money to Person.

Jones resigned in 2006, but more than $690,000 was transferred into her accounts after she had left the company. Person says she personally received payment not exceeding $125,000.

Jones, who is from Lothian, Md., pleaded guilty in January to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She will be sentenced Aug. 16.
