BREAKING: The Chinese Yuan Becomes Official Currency in Zimbabwe

Story by Howafrica.com
Written by Mathew Ogunsina

This is another milestone set by Beijing to be in the court of the great powers, those whose currency refers. As of January 1, the yuan (or remimbi) rub shoulders with the US dollar, South African rand and the Botswana pula in the pockets of the people of Zimbabwe.

It must be said that the situation in this country is special. He has no national currency since 2009. The failed land reform President-dictator Robert Mugabe has led to a severe economic crisis that the government tried to stop cranking printing money. Result: hyperinflation than 500,000,000,000% according to the IMF. In 2009, the face value of the last break of the Zimbabwean dollar circulated by the national bank of the country had reached a surreal level: 100.000 billion!

This colossal runaway had forced the country to bury the dollar and instead use foreign currencies. This summer, the last ticket holders could exchange to the central bank over $ 1 to 35 million Zimbabwean billion. An absolutely dizzying exchange rate.

Xi Jinping has mobilized to impose the yuan

The yuan, he built several months ago the basket of currencies that make up the foreign exchange reserves of Zimbabwe. And so, in 2016, it can be used for all payments of daily life. To succeed in imposing and its currency, China has multiplied gestures of goodwill. Xi Jinping, the president, whose movements are rare, personally went to Harare, the capital, in early December, with some arguments in the round.

China is now the largest trading partner of the country, agreed to write off a debt of 40 million US dollars was Zimbabwe and pledged a loan of $ 1 billion, with lower rates. Several agreements, mainly aimed to enhance and rebuild infrastructure were also signed.

Inexpensive gestures to the world’s largest economy whose currency gains greater legitimacy in exchange. The side of the Zimbabwean government is a winning transaction. President Robert Mugabe, speaking Tuesday hope it will facilitate the “cash injection” and even takes to dream that this agreement “could give a boost to the economy.” Shunned by his former Western partners because of its failure to respect human rights, Zimbabwe looks more than ever towards the East ..

CNN cuts all ties with Democratic Party Chief Donna Brazile after hacked email shows she leaked a SECOND debate question to Hillary's campaign

Story by Daily Mail
Written by David Martosko

* Interim Democratic Party Chairwoman Donna Brazile no longer has a job as a paid commentator on CNN
* WikiLeaks has published an email showing she leaked a CNN Democratic primary debate question to senior Hillary Clinton aides a day in advance
* The question, about lead poisoning in the Flint, Michigan water supply, was asked in the debate where Clinton squared off against Bernie Sanders
* Brazile also wrote one of the Clinton staffers with a death-penalty question from a CNN-hosted town hall one day ahead of time
* 'From time to time I get the questions in advance,' she wrote, later claiming Russian hackers had set her up
* CNN now says: 'We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign'

CNN has cut all ties with Interim Democratic Party Chairwoman Donna Brazile, following revelations that she shared at least two questions with Hillary Clinton's campaign in advance of CNN-hosted Democratic debates and town hall broadcasts.

'We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor,' the network's PR department said in a statement.

Brazile's actions were uncovered in emails released by WikiLeaks after a hacker penetrated the Gmail account of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

On Monday the anti-secrecy group published a March 5 email showing Brazile tipping off Podesta and Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri about a question that an audience member would ask a day later during a debate against rival Bernie Sanders.

The event, hosted in water-poisoned Flint, Michigan, was moderated by CNN anchors Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper.

'One of the questions directed to HRC tomorrow is from a woman with a rash,' Brazile wrote.

'Her family has lead poison and she will ask what, if anything, will Hillary do as president to help the ppl [people] of Flint.'

A woman named Lee-Anne Walters ended up asking the question.

'After my family, the city of Flint and the children in D.C. were poisoned by lead, will you make a personal promise to me right now that, as president, in your first 100 days in office, you will make it a requirement that all public water systems must remove all lead service lines throughout the entire United States, and notification made to the citizens that have said service lines?' Walters asked.

Republicans' hackles shot up last month when a Wikileaks email dated March 12 showed Brazile sending Palmieri a question about death penalty politics, which an exonerated death row inmate asked her the next night – almost verbatim – during a CNN-hosted town hall.

'From time to time I get the questions in advance,' Brazile wrote, according to the WikiLeaks-released email.

CNN employed Brazile as a paid commentator. She frequently advocated for Democratic candidates on the network until she took over the helm of the Democratic National Committee following the resignation of chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz – who was forced out amid charges of anti-Sanders partisanship.

SHE'S OUT: CNN has cut all ties with Donna Brazile, the Democratic Party's interim chairwoman, after WikiLeaks emails established that she cheated by giving Hillary Clinton's campaign at least two debate and town hall questions ahead of the CNN-hosted events

When the death penalty email became public on October 14, she voluntarily 'suspended' her CNN contract, according to two network sources.

At the same time, she vehemently denied sending the March 12 email, telling Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly that she was being 'persecuted' over an email Russian hackers had likely inserted to embarrass her.

'I am not going to try to validate falsified information,' she declared.

CNN's statement on Monday claimed the network 'accepted Donna Brazile's resignation as a CNN contributor' on October 14.

The network denied ever giving her 'access to any questions, prep material, attendee list, backgroud information or meetings in advance of a town hall or debate.

Just before noon on Monday, Brazile tweeted: 'Thank you @CNN. Honored to be a Democratic Strategist and commentator on the network. Godspeed to all my former colleagues.'

On Sunday afternoon, seeming to anticipate more headaches, she tweeted: 'Please, God, let this end soon.'

Brazile referred media questions to a statement she issued on October 11, in which she claimed that 'as a longtime political activist with deep ties to our party, I supported all of our candidates for president. I often shared my thoughts with each and every campaign, and any suggestions that indicate otherwise are simply untrue.'

'As it pertains to the CNN Debates, I never had access to questions and would never have shared them with the candidates if I did,' she said then.

Congressman Elijah Cummings Calls on FBI Director to Disclose Investigative Steps Taken Against Trump Confidants

“Explosive Information” Being Withheld From Public by FBI,According to Senate Leader Harry Reid
________________________________________________
Link to Former Attorney Generals rip FBI Director James Comey: http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/31/politics/eric-holder-op-ed-rips-comey-letter/
________________________________________________

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after FBI Director James Comey sent an unprecedented letter to Congress on Friday describing investigative steps the FBI is taking regarding emails that may be “pertinent” — but not necessarily “significant” — to the investigation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s emails:

“I have great personal respect for Director Comey, and I sincerely believe that he is a man of integrity, independence, and good intentions, but I have grave concerns that the credibility of the FBI could be damaged in immeasurable ways.”

“If it is comes out after the election that the FBI kept secret from the American people the fact that it was investigating former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, or seeking access to his emails, or investigating anyone else associated with Trump, then I have no idea how Director Comey will be able to explain his actions. I do not know how Director Comey will justify his decision to withhold information relating to Trump while publicly announcing ongoing investigative steps against his opponent just days before the election.”

“Director Comey broke with longstanding precedent and testified about Secretary Clinton’s case in the interest of ‘transparency’ even though his ‘all star’ team of FBI investigators and Justice Department prosecutors unanimously agreed there was no criminal case. He then submitted to relentless Republican demands to produce the FBI’s interview notes, internal memos, and other evidence in the case. Now he has gone even further by making public future investigative steps the FBI plans to take.”

“In explaining his actions before the House Judiciary Committee, Director Comey testified that he believed this unprecedented level of transparency was appropriate in light of the ‘exceptional circumstances’ in this case.”

“Yet, Director Comey has declined to discuss any details whatsoever in the reported FBI investigation of Donald Trump’s campaign manager and his ties with Russian interests, he has refused to say whether FBI agents are examining Roger Stone’s advance knowledge of WikiLeaks and illegal Russian hacks, and he has provided no information to the public about the FBI’s role in investigating numerous other troubling connections between Donald Trump, his associates, and Russian interests.”

“U.S. intelligence agencies assess that Russian interests are attempting to interfere with the United States election. It is difficult to imagine more exceptional circumstances than these.”

“I am extremely concerned that if information about the FBI investigating Trump confidants does not become public until after the election, Director Comey will have no way to explain why he withheld it beforehand while at the same time disclosing investigative steps relating to Secretary Clinton. The American people expect fundamental fairness from our law enforcement officials, and that is exactly what they deserve.”

The current FBI inquiry appears to relate to emails belonging to Huma Abedin, the vice chair of Secretary Clinton’s presidential campaign, and a laptop she may have shared with her husband, former Congressman Anthony Weiner.

However, multiple press reports indicate that the FBI is also currently investigating the firm of Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and its potentially illegal ties to Russian interests.

To date, Director Comey has declined to confirm publicly the existence of the Manafort investigation or describe any investigative steps the FBI is taking, such as seeking access to emails. Manafort reportedly was forced to resign from the Trump campaign in August in the wake of “revelations about his work on behalf of pro-Russian figures.”

On Sunday, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid sent a letter to Director Comey highlighting this double standard:

“In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russian government—a foreign interest openly hostile to the United States, which Trump praises at every opportunity. The public has a right to know this information.”

Appearing this morning on CNN, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, was asked about troubling ties between Trump officials and Russian interests. In response, he stated:

“If there are facts available to the FBI that would support an investigation that indicates a violation of the law, then the FBI should follow the truth wherever it leads them.”

On August 30, 2016, Ranking Member Cummings, along with Ranking Members John Conyers, Jr., Elliot L. Engel, and Bennie G. Thompson from the Judiciary, Foreign Affairs, and Homeland Security Committees, sent a detailed letter to Director Comey requesting that the FBI assess whether connections between Trump campaign officials and Russian interests may have contributed to cyber attacks against the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in order to interfere with the U.S. presidential election.

On October 14, 2016, the same four Ranking Members issued the following joint statement:

“Troubling new evidence appears to show that the Trump campaign not only was aware of cyber attacks against Secretary Clinton’s campaign chairman, but was openly bragging about it as far back as August. For months, we have been asking the FBI to examine links between the Trump campaign and illegal Russian efforts to affect our election, including interviewing Trump advisor Roger Stone. In light of this new evidence—and these exceptional circumstances—we call on the FBI to fully investigate and explain to the American people what steps it is taking to disrupt this ongoing criminal activity. Elections are the bedrock of our nation’s democracy and a model we hold out to the world, so we must counter any foreign or domestic efforts to threaten the integrity of our electoral process.”

Report Shows a Person is Killed in Brazil Every Nine Minutes

Story by Rio Times

Police–related deaths in Brazil are higher than Honduras, considered the most violent country in the world.
____________________________________

Sao Paulo, Brazil – In the last five years there have been more violent deaths in Brazil than war-torn Syria, according to the Brazilian Forum on Public Security. The data from the Forum’s 10th yearbook, shows that close to 279,000 people died from violent deaths in the country from 2011 to 2015, while in the Middle Eastern country, according to United Nations’ data, a little over 256,000 lives were lost due to violence.

“As the world is discussing how to avoid the tragedy that has taken place in Aleppo, in Damascus and several other cities, in Brazil we pretend that the problem does not exist,” the Forum’s CEO, Renato Sérgio de Lima told government news sources. “We think that it is a minor problem. We persistently show that we do not take security as a national priority,” added the executive.

The report shows that in 2015 one Brazilian was violently killed every nine minutes in the country, totaling the number of violent deaths to over 58,000.

Of the over 58,000 violent deaths recorded in Brazil last year a vast majority (52,570) was caused by homicides while deaths as a consequence of police intervention totaled 3,345 and in the commission of a robbery totaled 2,307.

The yearbook also reports Sergipe as the state with the greatest proportion of violent deaths per inhabitant, followed by Alagoas and Rio Grande do Norte. Despite the amply reported violent deaths in São Paulo, the state appears in the report as having one of the lowest rates of violent deaths per one thousand inhabitants, along with the states of Santa Catarina and Roraima.

At the same times though, São Paulo is among the top ranked when in comes to violent deaths due to police intervention. In absolute numbers the number of people killed by police in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro alone make up 45 percent of the total registered for the category.

Police–related deaths are one of the main concerns of Forum executives. “Our police fatality rate is higher than that of Honduras, which is considered the most violent country (in proportional terms), in the world,” says Lima. “This is a problem that remains very serious in the country and is not subject specifically to the size of this new reality, whether the terrorism law or other issues. But we have a very acute problem of police work pattern.”

The data, however, shows that if on the one hand police in Brazil kill a high number of civilians, they themselves are also often the victims of violent death. The yearbook shows that in 2015 393 police officers (both on and out-of-duty) were killed in Brazil.

“More than double the number of police officers are killed in Brazil than in the U.S. every year,” Lima said during an interview to CBN radio on Friday morning.

The release of the report by the Forum on Public Security comes just as high-ranking Brazilian government officials meet to discuss solutions for public security. On Friday President Michel Temer scheduled a meeting with Supreme Chief Justice Carmen Lucia Rocha; Justice Minister, Alexandre de Moraes; Senate President, Renan Calheiros; Speaker of the House, Rodrigo Maia; Defense Minister Raul Jungmann; and Institutional Security Chief Sergio Etchegoyen to discuss public security.

“It will be a very significant moment, because the meeting of the three branches of the State and other agencies will discuss together how to solve the country’s public security of the country,” said Temer during a news conference on Thursday. “It is a distressing issue for the Brazilian people, and that is why we all have to collaborate,” he added.

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings Issues Statement on FBI Letter to Congress

Washington, D.C. (Oct. 28, 2016) – Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after receiving a letter from the FBI explaining that it would review new emails related to its investigation of Secretary Clinton:

“Frankly, I was surprised that the FBI sent this letter given how obvious it was that Republicans would immediately misconstrue and mischaracterize it. The FBI Director did explain in his letter that none of this information may even be significant, but that did not stop Republicans from hyperventilating and making wild accusations. I can understand the FBI’s concern about being attacked for not keeping Republicans informed of any possible development—no matter how small—but I believe the FBI now has an obligation to make public as much information as possible as soon as possible to eliminate any inaccuracies or confusion about these issues.”

News/Talk Sees Nationwide Growth and It’s Not All Politics.

Story by Inside Radio

Many news and news/talk stations punched higher in Nielsen’s October ratings survey with the fiery election and its multitude of story lines often credited with the increase. But programmers at news/talk stations says there’s more to their rising numbers than just the over-the-top political campaign.

“The election—and the craziness of the campaign and coverage, from the news networks to late-night shows—is most definitely top of mind,” says Bill Hess, VP of News Talk at Cumulus Media. “This campaign, especially, is providing fresh content each and every day.”

Hess also programs talk WMAL AM&FM Washington (630, 105.9), which jumped 3.1-4.0 in the new numbers. While some programmers credit October survey increases to election-fueled Time Spent Listening spikes, Hess says both TSL and cume are up. Cume increased year-over-year almost every month in 2016 for WMAL and TSL expanded as listeners resumed regular habits after returning from summer vacations. Hess expects the growth to continue in the November ratings survey, which covers Oct.6-Nov. 2. “November is actually October and, anecdotally, the conversation is on fire,” Hess says.

Ratings are also on the rise at Tribune Media talk WGN Chicago (720), which shot up 3.7-4.3 for its biggest share since April, putting it in the top five. But Todd Manley, VP of Content & Programming, attributes very little of the bump to the campaign. “I think there’s some fatigue on the topic that has actually popped the cume on the music FMs,” Manley says. “Here in Chicago the biggest chatter is around the Cubs right now.” An outdoor campaign helped WGN add 60,000 cume persons in the October survey, which covered the period from Sept. 8-Oct. 5. “If we can grow that more, November will be even better since our overall TSL is 1:45 daily, which leads the market,” Manley says.

Kevin LaRue, program director at Bonneville’s “NewsRadio” KSL-FM Salt Lake City (102.7), says the news/talker struggled with how to cover the national election. “It’s very difficult with someone like Donald Trump who doubles down on scandalous reports,” LaRue told Inside Radio. “He kick-starts even more negative coverage and creates a media monster that he can go out and slay for his followers.”

KSL-FM notched a two-share increase during the October survey, moving from a 6.1 to an 8.1. The station changed 9.5 hours of weekday programming this year, relaunching and expanding its midday show in April and introducing new hosts in afternoons and nights in August. That 2-share pop reflects growing cume and stable TSL. “In prime, our adult 25-54 audience grew 35% from September to October—and TSL didn’t drop a minute,” LaRue says. “So was some of it sampling? Show appeal and the KSL brand? Panel? I guess we’ll see in four weeks but our new hosts sound great.”

News/talk’s fall ratings bump is predictable, even if it may be larger this year due to the election. The challenge is maintaining the momentum after the campaign rhetoric ends. “The election may be Topic A right now, but the exhilarating aspect of news/talk is that topic A can change on a dime…a big local story erupts, terrorism flares up, and then there’s the presidential transition, which is a local story here in DC,” Hess says. “Continuing to focus on the big stories in each of our markets, and remembering that we must be compelling, passionate and entertaining each time we crack the microphone, are the keys to our continued success as we build upon the listenership increases this fall.” At WGN, Manley says he’ll focus on “really compelling Chicago stories” and the conversation surrounding the new administration’s transition teams. And for KSL-FM’s LaRue, the watchwords are “improved human connection,” which he defines as hosts that tell stories, are real and talk to the audience instead of just reporting. That’s reflected in some station imaging pieces, such as a promo that candidly admits, “We wouldn’t be truthful if we told you we know where our country is headed.” KSL-FM aims to offer a touch of comfort as it discusses all the events that made 2016 a tumultuous year. “This is a safe place for you, this is your home,” LaRue says of the station.

Radio Legend The Cool Gent Herb Kent Passes

Herb Kent the ‘Cool Gent’ passes after what would be his last radio show Saturday

Story by Chicago Defender
By Kai EL’ Zabar

Black Chicago’s favorite radio personality known by his handle as the “Cool Gent” has moved on to where all cool cats go. Born on Oct. 5, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, made him 88. He made his transition Saturday evening just two years shy of turning 90.

Herb received his early musical inspiration from the Chicago, R&B clubs located in his South Side neighborhood and pursued his love of music with a passion for nearly 70 years. Herb Kent earned several descriptive and affectionate names denoting his talent among, which were ‘Herbie Baby,’ the ‘Cool Gent’ and ‘King of the Dusties.’ He entertained millions of listeners throughout the world with his knowledge of music, playing the best of the best and his weekly contests pitting one talent against another allowing the listening audience to weigh in. One such recent contest was Michael Jackson against Prince. He’d choose one and another radio personnel would call the other. The audience would ring the lines as he’d played song for song voting song for song. It was all in a day’s fun but kept listeners engaged and tuned in.

Mr. Kent attended Hyde Park High School and by age 16 (1944), he got a shot at radio by appearing on-air at Chicago’s prestigious WBEZ Radio station and he was bit by the bug. In 1948 his first paid gig was for WGRY, a Gary radio station and in 1952 he landed a salaried job at WGES hosting a country western show. In the late 50’s he began working for WJOB in Hammond Indiana. The sprints at these small stations were the beginning of what became his life long career hosting a number radio shows throughout Chicago including WVON, WJJD and V103, where he was still working through his last day on earth. His early start gave him plenty of time to develop his unique radio communication style, which made him a great on-air personality.

Kent cut his teeth in radio when the DJ’s had power and authority programming their own shows. They could make or break a talent and signal handedly build their own listening audiences based on their music playlist. He not only has been able to entertain and inform listeners on his weekly radio show, he has also opened many doors for African Americans. He has proven to be a bankable commodity and is a living icon.

He is often given credit for launching the careers of R&B legends Minnie Ripperton, also a native Chicagoan who grew up in Bronzeville and attended Hyde Park High school; Curtis Mayfield, Smoky Robinson and the Temptations.

Like most contributors to society Mr. Kent was multi-dimensional making a difference in various areas of life. He served as a civil rights activist, and used his popular broadcast platform as a voice to speak about African-American issues. So it is duly noted that he was also affectionately referred to as, “The Voice of the People.”

Among Mr Kent’s many awards and recognitions include his 1995 induction into the Museum of Broadcast Communications Radio Hall of Fame. In 1996, Kent witnessed the official dedication of a street on Chicago’s South Side in his honor: “Herb Kent Drive.” He was also recognized by the dedication of a United States postal stamp bearing his image, which was included in the 1998 “Golden Days of Radio” series. The following year, Herb Kent was named the Honorary Mayor of Bronzeville by its residents. In January of this year, Mr. Kent received the Chicago Defender’s Men of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Honoree for the excellence he has personified as one of the most important figures in Chicago radio and his service to the community.

In an interview about his autobiography, “Cool Gent: the Nine Lives of Radio Legend Herb Kent,” Herb Kent described himself, as a straight-A college student in the 1940s, enamored with radios. He said that he has loved radio since the age of 5.

Mr. Kent with a smooth, mellifluous voice just perfect for the medium, which remained his signature, was told straight out by a professor, “You have the best voice in class, but you’ll never make it in radio because you’re a Negro.”

However like many Black men who were not encouraged by teachers Kent, went on to prove his professor wrong.

Mr. Kent, stated that, “You can’t live the way I have without some hard and sad times.”

He estimated that he faced death at least nine times because of his rock-and-roll lifestyle, which included lots of women and lots of hard partying.

“I hope readers of my book will learn to stay away from substance abuse,” says Kent, “But I also want readers to know that they should find what they really love and pursue it, and when you get knocked down, don’t stay down, get right back up.”

In his passing Mr. Kent leaves us his book, with a foreword written by Mayor Richard Daley. The autobiography is a fascinating read about celebrity, climbing upward, the evolving world of radio when deejays were star makers of the music industry and selected records from large rooms filled with vinyl disks. It gives the reader an inside glimpse of Chicago life up front and personal over the past 70 years.

His passion for radio was like the true maestro’s, though he may not have composed music he did compose and created moods for the listening audience through his orchestrated selection of songs. Herb Kent the ‘Cool Gent,” performed his last orchestrated symphony of sound Saturday morning with his final radio broadcast and then he dropped the mic.

Kent cut his teeth in radio when the DJ’s had power and authority programming their own shows. They could make or break a talent and signal handedly build their own listening audiences based on their music playlist. He is this year’s Men of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Honoree for the excellence he has personified as one of the most important figures in Chicago radio. He not only has been able to entertain and inform listeners on his weekly radio show, he has also opened many doors for African Americans. He has proven to be a bankable commodity and is a living icon.

Statement from Al Sharpton by U.S. Police Chief Group for Historical Mistreatment of Communities of Color

For Immediate Release
Contact: Rachel Noerdlinger/212.681-1380
rnoerdinger@mercuryllc.com

New York, NY (Monday, October 17, 2016) – Rev. Al Sharpton, founder and president of National Action Network (NAN) welcomed the apology by the president of America’s largest police organization on Monday for recognizing the historically unfair treatment by law enforcement on communities of color but wants his words backed by action.

As a preacher and founder of the National Action Network, Rev. Al Sharpton is keenly aware of the power of words but knows they are meaningless if nothing changes. His organization has fought for justice on police misconduct cases across the country since 1991 and the theme of his work is turning demonstration into legislation. His hope after hearing the words of Terrence M. Cunningham, the chief of police in Wellesley, Mass. who delivered his remarks at the convention in San Diego of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, is that he will urge officers around the United States to back his words up with action and legislation to protect communities of color from the onslaught of police misconduct that has disturbed the country.

NAN is fighting police misconduct cases ranging from the Eric Garner case in New York to the Terrence Crutcher case in Tulsa and words are important but action is integral.

Florida Man Gets 20 Years for Shooting at George Zimmerman's Vehicle

Story by AP/NBC News

SANFORD, Fla. — A Florida man who fired at George Zimmerman's vehicle during a road-rage confrontation has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Zimmerman said 38-year-old Matthew Apperson showed no regard for human life during the May 2015 confrontation, and even seemed joyful because he mistakenly thought he'd killed Zimmerman, the Orlando Sentinel reported about the sentencing hearing Monday morning.

Zimmerman is the former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of second-degree murder after fatally shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012.

Apperson was convicted by a Seminole County jury last month of attempted second-degree murder, armed aggravated assault and shooting into a vehicle. Apperson testified at trial that he acted in self-defense after Zimmerman flashed a gun. Zimmerman disputed that.

After thrice extending the deadline for his offer to buy the company, Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan has come up short on his go-private offer. Today’s deadline for the Emmis board to accept the $4.10-per share offer has expired and Smulyan says he won’t be extending the deadline again.

“This letter is to confirm that the Proposal expired today pursuant to its terms and has not been extended,” Smulyan said in a letter to the board on Friday. “I am sorry we could not reach an agreement on the valuation. I look forward to continuing to work with you as we move Emmis forward as a public company.”

However, Smulyan is keeping the door open to further discussion with the board, to make “a similar proposal on similar or different terms” to his Aug. 18 offer, according to a filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission. Smulyan may also increase his ownership of Emmis stock.

Ex Chicago Gang Member Says They Are Dropping Guns In The Hood

Story by http://thingsthatsuck.info

Ex- gang member from Chicago says they are the victims. He says the government is dropping crates full of guns in the black community so that they can lock up certain individuals… He claims they have extended Clips, automatic weapons and guns that you cannot buy in a gun store.

He continuously asks, “where are the guns coming from”? He also says they drop off bullets along with the guns. He says the police continue to take guns off the streets yet the streets are still full of guns.

He says almost everybody in the hood have a gun and that there is a plot and plan that is strategically against the black community. He says they don’t have gun license so how are they getting the guns.

He claims he saw with his own eyes where they were putting crates full of guns out there so they can catch them with the guns and lock them up. This is a business.

Again he states, ” there are no gun manufacturers in the inner cities, so where are the guns coming from”?

"Presidential Debate: What Was Left Out" - Commentary by Al Sharpton

Story by the Huffington Post
Commentary by Al Sharpton

As I watched the second Presidential debate last night, I was mindful of the fact that several topics were simply ignored and not even brought up by either the moderators or the candidates themselves. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are running to be President of the United States — a position that entails not only handling domestic situations, but also serving as one of the most pertinent figures on the world stage. And yesterday, in front of an international audience (thanks to technology), there was no mention of Haiti when the latest reports show that over 1,000 people have died from the devastation of hurricane Matthew. Back here at home, police and criminal justice reform are core issues that many communities are pushing for continuously. How could this debate, taking place 15 miles from Ferguson, in the shadows of where Michael Brown was killed, fail to even touch on this important subject? Ignoring our concerns is continuing to marginalize us and we refuse to be left out.

Reuters reported today that Haiti started burying some of its dead in mass graves as over 1,000 people died, and now some 1.4 million are in need of humanitarian assistance. Doctors are warning of a cholera crisis and sadly, more deaths can be expected as disease spreads. How can we have a Presidential debate at the same time that such a huge tragedy is taking place in the western hemisphere and it’s not even mentioned? If over a 1,000 people died in another part of the world, the debate would have opened with a question about it. We would be lying to ourselves if we think otherwise. Even when it comes to the subject of immigration, why are the high number of Haitian deportations never discussed? These are glaring omissions that we cannot just gloss over — nor should we.

Two years ago, we at National Action Network were organizing rallies and pushing to get justice for Eric Garner who died after being placed in a police chokehold in Staten Island. While calling for accountability and reform in this case, another tragedy took place a few weeks later in Ferguson, MO when 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police. The issues that we raised with Garner’s death, Brown’s death and others through the years were not even uttered on the debate stage Sunday night. The rallying cry for criminal justice reform has now gained support from both the left and the right, but somehow there wasn’t even one question about it.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton following their second debate in St. Louis, Missouri

As communities of color and the poor continue to suffer the most from harsh police tactics, disproportionate summonses, arrests, tougher sentences and more, we need to know precisely where the candidates stand on these issues. What will either Clinton or Trump do to stop unjustified police killings, or to reform policing in America? What kind of Attorney General would they nominate? What kinds of recommendations from President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing would they implement? These are all extremely relevant and pertinent questions that were completely left out of this second Presidential debate.

As a civil rights leader, much of my work has focused on fighting on behalf of the voiceless, advocating for justice and ensuring that we have a seat at the table. When people already face societal inequities, ignoring their concerns is not alleviating those inequalities - it is simply disenfranchising them further. Social exclusion is a real thing and we saw it on full display during this debate. Whether done on purpose or subconsciously, the moderators and candidates simply left out certain topics and challenges that we need solutions and answers for.

When people sometimes ask why I continue to organize and march, this is why. We cannot afford to be left out. We must raise our voices ourselves. We refuse to be further silenced. And we can’t have drive-by shooting candidates or moderators; the tasks before us are far too great, and we need to know who is and who isn’t up to the challenge.

Thousands of Americans Head Inland to Escape Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew forecast for the Southeast American shore, hitting Cape Canaveral Friday morning.

Story by NBC News
Written by Kurt Chirbas, Alex Johnson, Alexander Smith and Corky Siemaszko

Thousands of Americans headed for higher ground Wednesday as Hurricane Matthew barreled toward the Florida and South Carolina coast and the death toll from the monster storm climbed to at least 25.

Evacuations were underway in the Sunshine State after Matthew, which hammered Haiti and strafed Cuba, began battering the Bahamas.

"We are preparing for the worst, we are hoping for the best and we're not taking any chances," said Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who warned that the Sunshine State could begin to feel Matthew's wrath within the next 24 hours.

The path of the storm:

* The forecast is for the eye of the storm to pass near Freeport, the Bahamas, on Thursday morning.
* Southeast Florida, specifically the West Palm Beach area, will likely be hit Thursday afternoon by tropical storm strength wind gusts. By Friday morning, Melbourne and/or Daytona Beach, Florida, could begin to be battered by hurricane wind gusts and rain.
* Charleston, South Carolina, should start feeling the effects of the storm on Saturday morning. By the afternoon, it's expected to be off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where it is forecast to weaken as it turns eastward and moves away from the land.

"Based on the current forecast the center of the storm will be close to Cape Canaveral on Friday morning," he said. "Regardless, if there is a direct impact the effects will be devastating."

In South Carolina, Gov. Nikki Haley ordered everybody out of the historic-but-low-lying cities of Charleston and Beaufort. And in a bid to keep the highways from being clogged, Haley urged Georgetown and Horry County residents to sit tight until Thursday.

"What we're trying to do is actually because the storm changed, we are changing with the storm," Haley said. "Beaufort and Charleston definitely need to go ahead and plan on evacuating at 3, but we saw that because the storm had slowed down, we can move that evacuation for Georgetown and Horry to tomorrow morning."

South Carolina officials on Wednesday evening said more than 250,000 people had already been evacuated.

But even before Haley spoke, west-bound traffic on Interstate 26 was already packed with South Carolinians and visitors like Lydia and Steve Dalton of Zionsville, Indiana headed away from the coast in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

"It took us a long time to get out of Charleston," Lydia Dalton told NBC News. "We thought we were leaving way ahead of everyone else."

Many were headed for the state capital Columbia, where hotel rooms were already scarce.

"The phones have been ringing off the hooks," said Jana Medlin, director of sales at the Inn at USC Wyndham Garden near the University of South Carolina campus.

Meanwhile, President Obama was briefed on the storm and the federal response at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters.

"I want to emphasize to the public: This is a serious storm," Obama said. "It has already hit Haiti with devastating effect. It is now in the process of moving through the Bahamas. Because it's not going to be hitting enough land, it is going to be building strength on its way to Florida."

"Not only is there still a chance that the core of the storm strikes Florida and some of the states further north, but even if you don't get the full force of the hurricane, we are still going to be seeing tropical force winds, the potential for a storm surge, and all of that could have a devastating effect," Obama added.

So far, according to officials, the monster storm is being blamed for 25 deaths: 19 in Haiti; four in the Dominican Republic; one on the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; one in northeastern Colombia.

On Florida's east coast, mandatory evacuations were underway from the barrier islands in Brevard County and many coastal residents in Duval, Volusia and Flagler counties were already starting to head inland.

There were empty shelves and long gas station lines as residents stocked up on supplies and fuel and prepared to make their own exodus ahead of the storm.

Scott, like the governors of Georgia and the Carolinas, has already declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard. He also ordered state offices in 26 counties closed on Thursday and Friday.

"It's a good that [people] are actually paying attention to the storm and are being prepared," said 45-year-old Stacie Klein of Delray Beach, Florida.

Several stores had been picked clean by Tuesday, Klein said.

"If things look too bad, it's hotel bound for me," she added. "I'm glued to the TV and have notifications and alerts sent to my phone."

Until Hurricane Hermine hit the Sunshine State last month as a Category 1 storm, many Floridians had never experienced one. More that a million people have moved to Florida since the last major hurricane, Wilma, hit the state in 2005, according to U.S. Census Figures.

Food and gas shortages were also reported up in South Carolina.

Myrtle Beach resident Michaela Choate, 22, said she "couldn't even get near a gas station" on Tuesday.

"It was so packed. You couldn't get into the parking lot," said Choate, who was able to fill up Wednesday before taking off with her family for Asheville, North Carolina.

"It's kind of scary to think something like this is coming to hit our home," she said.

The Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, police department asked residents to avoid calling 911 over gas shortages, adding, "Remember to be patient with one another."

Matthew caused widespread damage across Haiti before making landfall in in Cuba around 8 p.m. ET Tuesday. It strafed Cuba's coast and was expected to being bearing down on the Bahamas later Wednesday.

North Carolina Gov. Gov. Pat McCrory had also declared an emergency in 66 counties, but on Wednesday he expressed relief as the latest models showed the storm moving away from the coastal areas of his state.

"I just hope that thing goes out to the ocean before it even hits our borders," he said.

Supreme Court rejects trademark appeal from Washington Redskins

Written by Ben Rohrbach

Sell all the Washington Redskins paraphernalia you want. There’s nothing Dan Snyder can do about it.

For now.

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the Redskins, who hoped to reverse an earlier U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruling that canceled the team’s trademarks based on a policy that “prohibits registration of marks that may disparage persons or bring them into contempt or disrepute.”

In their appeal, the Redskins cited a list of ridiculously offensive trademarks, including DUMB BLONDE beer, CRACKA AZZ SKATEBOARDS, WHITE GIRL WITH A BOOTY apparel and OH! MY NAPPY HAIR shampoo. The team argued the nickname was not offensive to Native Americans, even though the PTO canceled the team’s six trademarks at the request of Native American activists who found the term offensive and, by definition, “a ‘redskin’ is the scalped head of a Native American, sold, like a pelt, for cash.”

While that compelling argument wasn’t enough to sway Ruth Bader Ginsburg & Co., the nation’s top court did agree last week to hear a case brought forward by Asian-American rock band The Slants, which challenged the PTO’s policy based on the band’s First Amendment rights, according to multiple reports. A ruling in favor of the band would also be a victory for the Redskins, for what that’s worth.

In July 2015, a federal judge upheld the PTO’s 2014 ruling against the Redskins. According to reports, the team wanted their argument lumped in with the band’s case, even before a federal court ruled on their appeal, which is yet another strange way of doing business by Snyder and his Redskins.

Colombians narrowly reject peace deal with the FARC

Story by CNN
Written by Deborah Bloom

Colombians narrowly rejected a referendum on Sunday on a peace deal between the government and former rebel group FARC that took over four years to negotiate and would have ended five decades of war.

In a final result few were anticipating, 50.22% of voters voted "no" on the single-issue ballot, a blow to President Juan Manuel Santos, whose popularity has suffered in his support of the deal.

Also known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC leadership released a statement expressing sadness at the vote. "With today's result, we know that our goal as a political movement is even more grand and strong. The FARC maintains the will of peace and reiterates its disposition to only use words as a weapon for constructing the future," the statement said.
