Ron Rivera hired as new Washington Redskins coach

Ron Rivera called his shot in early December and sank it before the end of the month.

Rivera, who was fired in early December by the Carolina Panthers and told reporters before he left "I will coach again," landed his next head coaching job about as soon as possible, become the latest in charge of the Washington Redskins. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Michael Silver reported Rivera's deal is for five years.

Rivera's eight and a half-season tenure with the Carolina Panthers came to an end at the start of 2019's final month. The decision was a result of an underperforming Panthers team that appeared rudderless without the services of Cam Newton, who was sidelined for the season due to injury, leaving Carolina to put its hopes and dreams on the arm of Kyle Allen. The Panthers saw positive results initially, but as the season took a turn for the worst, a coaching change under fairly new owner David Tepper became inevitable.

That opened a door into a vast expanse of opportunity for Rivera, whose name was mentioned as a possible candidate for most head coaching vacancies across the league. Redskins owner Dan Snyder moved quickly, though, ensuring the other clubs competing for the services of Rivera wouldn't even get an interview with him by bringing him in on the first day after the conclusion of the 2019 season and securing his signature before leaving their meeting.

The Rivera hire follows a day of change in the nation's capital that saw Redskins president and general manager Bruce Allen fired after 10 seasons spent in the team's front office. Combined with Rivera's arrival, Allen's removal creates intrigue in regards to the organizational hierarchy in this new era of Redskins football. Rivera did not own control of the team's roster while in Carolina, but could in Washington in a setup somewhat similar to that of Mike Shanahan, who came on board shortly after Allen was hired in late 2009.

One former Panther who saw his role in Washington greatly diminished in 2019 spoke highly of his former coach before he was officially hired. Josh Norman, who experienced his greatest success while playing cornerback for Rivera in Carolina, said the coach's hiring would create a "night and day" difference in culture, per ESPN. Veteran defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, who spent less than a full season playing under Rivera, provided a similarly glowing review of his former coach, telling Washington players "the greatest thing in their careers is about to happen" if Rivera was hired, per The Athletic.

That's the type of veteran support that makes a layup hiring into a slam dunk, at least initially, especially for a franchise that has lacked winning culture for some time.

Rivera's hire supplies Washington with an experienced head coach for a team dotted with young talent, starting with its quarterback, Dwayne Haskins. The Redskins will also have the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to spend on whatever need it deems most important. With Rivera's defensive background considered, perhaps Washington selects Ohio State havoc-wreaker Chase Young to add an injection of pass-rushing power to its bottom-10 defense.

Those decisions will come in late April. But the most important move was made quickly this week by Snyder, who has his coach in place with all of 2020 still ahead of his beleaguered franchise.

Billionaire Presidential Candidates Invest in Unprecedented Ad Spending

Billionaire presidential candidates Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer have spent so much money on political advertising that it’s making industry insiders’ heads spin. According to the latest Ad Age Datacenter analysis of political ad spending in partnership with Kantar/CMAG, the two have both already spent more than $100 million on ad spending across broadcast TV, cable and radio as well as Facebook. Considering Bloomberg only joined the race on Nov. 24, the pace of his spending is near-flabbergasting.

Homing in on just radio, Tom Steyer For President ran 5,547 ads the week of Dec. 23-29 to land at No. 98 among the top radio advertisers, as tracked by Media Monitors.

For context, AdAge cites that President Trump has spent just over $24.8 million on TV, radio, and Facebook, while all the other major candidates—Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, etc.—have spent $89.5 million on the same media combined.

This means that more than two-thirds of the $345.5 million in total campaign ad outlay tracked by the Datacenter study is coming from just two high-rolling candidates.

For further context, Politico points out that the amount of money Bloomberg has spent in just one month roughly equates to what Obama spent over the course of the entirety of his general election campaign.

“We’ve never seen spending like this in a presidential race,” Jim McLaughlin, a Republican political strategist who worked as a consultant for Bloomberg’s mayoral bids in New York is quoted as saying in Politico. “He has a limitless budget,” he said of Bloomberg.

And while these two candidates obviously hope their immense ad buys will sway voters, the two remain, at least at present, stuck in single digits in the polls. Christian Heiens, a political marketer with Saber Communications, a right-leaning media buying agency, told Politico he isn’t convinced Bloomberg and Steyer will be able to rise significantly or consistently through their spending.

“After you see the same TV ad 10 times, it’s not going to have as big an impact,” Heiens said. “And that’s not just in politics, that’s in anything in marketing.”

Triton Announces Plans To Begin Measuring U.S. Podcast Listening.

Triton Digital has been quietly building its podcast measurement service during the past year leaving the question of “when” not “if” it would track the U.S. market hanging in the air. The answer is now known: March 2020. That’s when Triton’s Podcast Reports will begin being published in the U.S. with four clients on board so far, including NPR, Entercom’s Radio.com, Cumulus Media, and Stitcher—which, like Triton, is owned by E.W. Scripps.

Triton will only measure those podcasters that sign up for the service. The measurement is done by Triton directly integrating with those publishers’ podcast hosting platforms, which it says will eliminate “inconsistent” measurement practices and self-reported data. The reports that Triton will give clients will provide a ranking of the top networks and top podcasts in the U.S. Reported entities will be ranked by average weekly downloads which Triton says will comply with Version 2.0 of the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines.

“We are pleased to leverage our 10-plus years of digital audio measurement expertise to provide reliable and informative data around podcast consumption in the U.S.,” said John Rosso, President of Market Development at Triton Digital. “Our Podcast Reports will provide buyers with the trusted, third-party podcast measurement they need to make informed decisions around podcast advertising. Furthermore, our reports will provide podcast Networks with the reputable consumption data they need to grow their podcast strategies, gain a better understanding of their listening audiences, and increase their advertising revenue.”

The first U.S. Podcast Report will debut in March. Triton data will also be made available within FreeWheel’s Strata platform, which offers comprehensive media planning and buying solutions for agencies. Joy Baer, General Manager at FreeWheel, thinks it will become a “critical tool” for both agencies and publishers moving forward. “With podcast consumption on the rise each year, it’s important we provide our clients with the information they need to ensure they can optimally add podcasts to their media plans.,” Baer said.

Triton Digital joins a podcast measurement business that already includes several other services. Podtrac releases monthly updates of the biggest publishers and shows among its clients. Edison Research announced last spring that it would begin producing a four-times-a-year ranker of what shows people are listening to. Its ten charter subscribers last month received their first data. And Nielsen launched its Podcast Listener Buying Power Service in July. While not a quantitative service that counts downloads, Nielsen’s qualitative service uses data from Nielsen Scarborough to help podcasters understand what their listeners buy and where they shop, while allowing advertisers to target audiences with specific interests and buying habits.

‘An Important Step Forward’

NPR is one of the few that’s subscribing to more than one of the measurement services, with Triton now part of its data arsenal. Joel Sucherman, NPR's VP for New Platform Partnerships, said Triton’s metrics will allow NPR to better serve its listeners, and grow the overall podcast audience. “Since the early days of podcasting NPR has advocated for reliable third-party data measurement, we are excited to participate in Triton’s Podcast Reports and will continue supporting efforts that increase transparency in the podcast industry,” Sucherman said.

Entercom is another of Triton’s launch clients. The company has in recent months taken a series of steps to capture a bigger slice of podcast listening on its Radio.com app. Entercom Chief Digital Officer J.D. Crowley said they were excited about the introduction of a digital audio measurement serviced provided by a trusted and IAB Tech Lab-certified partner like Triton. “We believe this is a critical step to increase engagement from advertisers and significantly impact the growth of the podcast industry overall,” he said.

Larry Linietsky, Senior VP, Digital Operations and Business Development at Cumulus Media, echoed that sentiment. “The Triton Podcast Reports are an important step in providing a snapshot of reliable, accurate, transparent, and objective measurement for partners at this critical time of explosive growth in audio via podcasting” he said.

Sarah van Mosel, Chief Revenue Officer at Triton sister company Stitcher, agreed. “While we have long prided ourselves on providing reliable and trustworthy data to our clients, the ability to compare apples to apples across the industry is an important step forward,” she said.

Triton Digital currently publishes Podcast Reports in Australia and Latin America. It announced last month that the Netherlands will join the list early next year.

U.S. President Trump holds rally in Michigan amid impeachment


U.S. President Donald Trump held a "Merry Christmas" campaign rally in Battle Creek, Mich., on Wednesday at the same time the House of Representatives voted on whether or not to impeach him on Capitol Hill. This is the third time in U.S. history that a president faced impeachment by the House. The majority of the House had voted to impeach Trump as the rally took place.

Just moments after the House impeached President Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declined to say when — or even if — Democrats will deliver the articles to the Senate.

"We'll make that decision as a group, as we always have, as we go along," Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol.

Despite repeated attempts by reporters to press her on timing, Pelosi declined to commit to sending the two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — across the Capitol, essentially putting the process in limbo as it looms unfinished over the Senate and White House.

Pelosi and her fellow Democrats have been skeptical that the GOP-controlled Senate will conduct a fair and impartial trial, especially after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — who would essentially serve as jury foreman in the trial — conceded that it would not.

“I’m not impartial about this at all,” he told reporters Tuesday.

Seemingly alluding to those comments, Pelosi cited a need to "see what the process is on the Senate side" before making any decisions about the timing of delivery or the naming of impeachment managers to prosecute the case.

“And I would hope that that would be soon,” the Speaker said, adding that the delivery would not be “tonight.”

“So far we haven’t seen anything that looks fair to us,” she added.

Earlier in the week, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Democrats would likely not turn over the articles to the Senate immediately; however, he also dismissed the idea that the delay would be extensive.

"I don't think that that's the path we'll follow. But that does not mean that we will immediately deliver," Hoyer said. "There are considerations related to other legislation. As I understand the rules of the Senate, once they receive the articles, they have to act. They have to go into trial. They can't do any other work."

Still, the threat of delay did not appear to raise much concern among Republicans.

“Folks, this might be the greatest compliment McConnell has ever received,” tweeted Josh Holmes, a GOP strategist who serves as an outside adviser to McConnell. “They are seriously entertaining holding a grenade with the pin pulled rather than facing what happens when they send it over McConnell’s wall.”

The idea of delaying sending the two impeachment articles to the Senate first surfaced last week in conversations among Democrats, but it picked up steam in the lead-up to Wednesday’s House floor vote on the articles.

Harvard Law School Professor Laurence Tribe further propelled the idea forward in a Washington Post op-ed in which he argued that delaying the delivery of the articles would give Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) more leverage when negotiating with McConnell over the rules of the impeachment trial.

The key lingering question is whether McConnell and Senate Republicans will cede to Democrats' requests to call witnesses, including acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton, to testify before the upper chamber, which Democrats say will be key in order to have a fair trial.

Senate Republicans, meanwhile, are hammering the idea that the articles would sit idle in the lower chamber. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) on Wednesday called that strategy "one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of."

"Are they threatening to withhold the articles of impeachment?" he told The Hill. "That doesn't accomplish their intended goal. That just means we won't be having a trial."

Prior to Pelosi’s press conference Wednesday night, some Republicans had described the possible delay as a sign that Democrats are growing more partisan in the process by leaving the door open on impeachment heading into a crucial election year rather than expeditiously bringing the process to a close, as they had pledged throughout the process.

Still, when asked repeatedly what Pelosi would consider a "fair trial," she declined to say, while defending the Democrats' impeachment process from GOP allegations of unfairness.

"We had a very fair process in the House of Representatives," she stated. "We have legislation, approved by the Rules Committee, that will enable us to decide how we will send over the articles of impeachment."

The First European Scholars Were Taught By Africans In Egypt

Again and again, documented historical evidence has shattered widely held views that Europeans were the pioneers of early human civilization. In fact, there is corroborative evidence that half of humanity’s recorded history has passed before anyone in Europe could even learn to read and write.

Religious priests in Egypt began keeping records as far back as 4000 to 3000 BC, compared to two thousand years later, when Homer’s poems were still being handed down orally within the confines of the Greek city-states. Sometime after 3000 BC when the pharaohs of Egypt were in the process of building their first world-renowned pyramids, Europeans were piling up nothing more than mountains of rubbish heaps.

History reveals that famous well known Greeks (Europeans) whom we study their history and writings, studied at the feet of Egyptian scholars along the Nile Valley, Kemet. For instance, Philosopher Plato was a student at the Temple of Waset for 11 years. Also, Aristotle was a student there for 11-13 years.

Even Socrates spent at least 15 years at the same temple; likewise, Euclid, who studied for 10-11 years at the same temple. Pythagoras spent 22 years there. Hippocrates studied there for 20 years, plus a host of other little known Greeks who matriculated at Waset, among whom are Diodorus, Solon, Thales, Archimedes, and Euripides.

In fact, the Greek scholar, St. Clement of Alexandria, once said that if one were to list out the names of all the Greeks who studied under Egyptian tutors, a 1,000 paged book won’t be enough. Even Herodotus mentioned it, same with Plato and Aristotle.



The truth is that it took at least 40 years to graduate from Waset, meaning none of the Greek scholars mentioned above even graduated. According to one African scholar, Thales was the first Greek student to receive training under Egyptian priests along the Nile Valley. Even Plato records that Thales was schooled in Egypt under the tutelage of the priests.

Many people today are of the opinion that the famous phrase ‘man know thyself’ (in Greek, qnothi seauton) were originally written and spoken by Socrates, the Greek philosopher, however, evidence suggests the ancient Egyptians were the first to write those words done on the outside of their Temple in the Nile Valley, and addressed the same words to new students, one of whom was likely to be Socrates himself.

In another example, the words ‘eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we shall die’, hitherto assigned to Socrates, has been discovered to have been coined by Imhotep, the African deity and ‘the world’s first recorded multi-genius’, instrumental to building the world’s first stone building – the Step Pyramid at Saqqara around 2630 BC.

Furthermore, contrary to widely held views, the first Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC, was not in reward of sportsmanship, physical strength or brinkmanship, rather, it was public ceremonial worship by the Greeks of the African God, Amon.

In fact, according to history, most of the European gods were of African descent and were given European names. The African god Amun, for example, was given the name of Zeus by the Greeks and called Jupiter by the Romans. Imhotep (the god of healing and medicine) has his name changed to Asclepius by the Greeks and Aesculapius by the Romans.

By far, one of the greatest contributions of the Egyptian Nile Valley to the world is its excellent educational system. In the Kemet educational system, the ultimate aim was for a person to become one with God, to “become like God” or “to become godlike through the revision of one’s own ‘Neter’ of how God is revealed in the person.” This was one of the highest endowments a family could bestow on a son in those days – education.

When the boys got into the Temple/Schools (or Grand Lodge), they were expected to study for 40 years in subjects such as grammar, arithmetic, Rhetoric and Dialectic, Geometry, Astronomy, Music, Architecture, Masonry, Carpentry, Engineering, Sculpture, Metallurgy, Agriculture, Mining, Forestry, Art and Magic.

In conclusion, it’s only right to say that Egypt was truly the cradle of civilization, grooming European scholars and teaching the world the true essence of civilization. As a result, no thought or learning is alien to Africa, which was the land such ideologies emanated from in the first place. And no amount of Eurocentric research can erase the historical contributions Egypt has bestowed to the world.

‘Watchmen’ recreates the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, exposing viewers to an ugly chapter


The premiere of HBO’s “Watchmen” was packed with allusions to the dense mythology of the landmark 1980s graphic novel that inspired it, thrilling fans and newcomers alike. But a solemn nod to a real-world event appears to have left the greatest impression on viewers.

The pilot episode opened with a stylized, searing recreation of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921, a two-day explosion of violence in which White Oklahomans killed hundreds of African-Americans and burned businesses in a prosperous district known as “Black Wall Street.” The bloody attack is considered “the single worst incident of racial violence in American history,” according to the Oklahoma Historical Society.

The facts of the Tulsa massacre — bullets flying, buildings aflame — appeared to have been unknown to many “Watchmen” viewers who expressed their disbelief on social media. Some said they were appalled to first learn of the event through a superhero-themed television show, while others blamed the country’s educational system for failing to highlight it in history curricula.

Tulsa Race Riot

The Tulsa race riot (also called the Tulsa race massacre, Greenwood Massacre, or the Black Wall Street Massacre) of 1921 took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when mobs of white residents attacked black residents and businesses of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has been called “the single worst incident of racial violence in American history.”[14] The attack, carried out on the ground and by air, destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the district — at that time the wealthiest black community in the United States, known as “Black Wall Street”.

More than 800 people were admitted to hospitals and more than 6,000 black residents were arrested and detained, many for several days. The Oklahoma Bureau of Vital Statistics officially recorded 36 dead, but the American Red Cross declined to provide an estimate. A 2001 state commission examination of events estimated that between 100 and 300 were killed in the rioting.

The riot began over Memorial Day weekend after 19-year-old Dick Rowland, a black shoeshiner, was accused of assaulting Sarah Page, the 17-year-old white elevator operator of the nearby Drexel Building. He was taken into custody. A subsequent gathering of angry local whites outside the courthouse where Rowland was being held, and the spread of rumors he had been lynched, alarmed the local black population, some of whom arrived at the courthouse armed. Shots were fired and twelve people were killed: ten white and two black. As news of these deaths spread throughout the city, mob violence exploded. Thousands of whites rampaged through the black neighborhood that night and the next day, killing men and women, burning and looting stores and homes. About 10,000 black people were left homeless, and property damage amounted to more than $1.5 million in real estate and $750,000 in personal property ($32 million in 2019).

Many survivors left Tulsa. Black and white residents who stayed in the city were silent for decades about the terror, violence, and losses of this event. The riot was largely omitted from local, state, and national histories: “The Tulsa race riot of 1921 was rarely mentioned in history books, classrooms or even in private. Blacks and whites alike grew into middle age unaware of what had taken place.”

In 1996, seventy-five years after the riot, a bipartisan group in the state legislature authorized formation of the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 (renamed Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Massacre, in November 2018). Members were appointed to investigate events, interview survivors, hear testimony from the public, and prepare a report of events. There was an effort toward public education about these events through the process. The Commission’s final report, published in 2001, said that the city had conspired with the mob of white citizens against black citizens; it recommended a program of reparations to survivors and their descendants. The state passed legislation to establish some scholarships for descendants of survivors, encourage economic development of Greenwood, and develop a memorial park in Tulsa to the riot victims. The park was dedicated in 2010.

"Madam Speaker, I rise today feeling the full weight of my duty, as a member of this august body, reflecting upon our oath of office to 'support and defend the Constitution, against all enemies foreign and domestic.' It is my sincere belief that under the circumstances that bring us here today, there is only one path for us to take to fulfill that oath.

"Thomas Paine, in the first of his series of pamphlets entitled The American Crisis, published 243 years ago tomorrow, intoned that 'these are the times that try men’s souls; The summer soldiers and sunshine patriots will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but, he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.'

"These words were written at a time when our Founders were rebelling against the tyrannical rule of the British monarchy. Today we have a President who seems to believe he is a king or above the law. Paine warned us that 'so unlimited a power can belong only to God Almighty.'

"My faith leads me to take very seriously the final words of our oath to faithfully discharge the duties of the office, 'so help me God.'

"Madam Speaker; Three days ago, I joined with a bi-partisan delegation of our colleagues celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

"We laid wreaths at the memorials of Generals George Patton and Anthony McAuliffe. We visited foxholes that were occupied by some brave soldiers who fought in some of the worst winter weather ever visited upon a battlefield. And we visited the Luxembourg American Cemetery, the final resting place of thousands of them and General George Patton.

"They were not summer soldiers in their efforts - 75 years ago – too preserve the Republic, and we must not be sunshine patriots today in our efforts to protect the Constitution upon which this great Republic stands.

"While our fight is not in the trenches of battlefields, but in the hallowed halls of this Congress, our duty is no less patriotic."

Retailers Draw On Radio To Make Holiday Sales Season Bright.


For Dec. 9-15, 2019, the top 10 on the Media Monitors’ tally are: State Farm at 1, GEICO at 2, The Home Depot at 3, iHeartRadio at 4, Macy’s at 5, JC Penney at 6, McDonald’s at 7, Vicks at 8, American Express at 9 and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 10.

Coming down the homestretch, retailers are leaning on radio to make their holiday sales season bright. In the second to last full week to lure shoppers with seasonal specials, offers of free shipping and other perks, no fewer than seven major retailers are among the top 100 advertisers on the AM/FM airwaves for Dec. 9-15, according to Media Monitors, which tracks radio, TV and cable advertising in 85 markets.

Leading the parade is Macy’s, which jumps to No. 5 from No. 8 the previous week, with 33,337 spot detections. It’s followed closely by JC Penney at No. 6 with 32,180, down one position from the week earlier. Further down the latest tally are Kohl’s (No. 26), Old Navy (No. 40), Burlington Coat Factory (No. 62), HomeGoods-Marshalls-TJ Maxx (No. 66) and Target (No. 83).

Walmart, last year’s No. 55 advertiser on radio, is nowhere to be found on the latest list, even as it’s perched atop the National TV advertisers for the week and is No. 2 at National Cable. Goodwill, another seasonal advertiser, is No. 88, while Hallmark is marketing its holiday greeting cards, ranked No. 91. And as more Americans get ready to hit the road for the holidays, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has put its pedal to the metal, airing 25,039 safe driving messages to land at No. 10.

American Express, a rarity on the radio list, suddenly parachutes in at No. 9, with 29,766 spots. While it made a similar radio blitz around this time back in 2013 and is an occasional radio user, American Express was not among the top 100 radio advertisers in 2018. Its top 10 ranking for the current list makes it the highest ranking financial services advertiser, a lucrative category that BIA Advisory Services forecasts will spend a hefty $2.2 billion on radio advertising in 2020 or 12% of the broad umbrella category’s $18.8 billion outlay. Over the course of the five-day convening, President and Mrs. Obama, as well as other prominent speakers and thought leaders, will join our Leaders for discussions around progress and opportunity in the Asia-Pacific region and values-based leadership.

'We've moved on' from Colin Kaepernick, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday the league has "moved on" from former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who changed the venue last-minute for an NFL sponsored workout and held his own workout last month.

Goodell was addressing the New England Patriots' video recording violation of the Cincinnati Bengals sideline on Sunday when he was asked about Kaepernick's recent workout.

"This was ... about creating an opportunity, which Colin's representatives came out in early October and we created that opportunity. It was a unique opportunity -- an incredible opportunity and he chose not to take it. I understand that. And we've moved on here," Goodell said at the National Football League owners' meetings at Las Colinas, in Irving, Texas.

Kaepernick's much-awaited private workout in front of dozens of NFL teams did not go as planned. He abruptly changed the venue at the last minute from the Atlanta Falcons training center in Flowery Branch, Georgia to a high school in Riverdale, south of Atlanta, where he opted to hold his own workout session.

Kaepernick's representatives said he wanted the session to be open to the media and the NFL balked, forcing him to change the location. Kaepernick's agents said he was told not to bring his own film crew to the previous venue.

The former quarterback's camp was also upset with the liability waiver the NFL wanted the player to sign, saying it was "unusual" and "addresses employment-related issues." They said the NFL rejected the standard waiver they had proposed.

About 300 fans -- and at least six scouts -- came to see Kaepernick at the new venue.

"So we're waiting for the 32 owners, the 32 teams, (Commissioner) Roger Goodell, all of them to stop running," Kaepernick said after the workout. "Stop running from the truth, stop running from the people."

The league said it was disappointed by the last-minute change of venue, which the NFL said happened 30 minutes before the start of the event.

It league accused Kaepernick of not showing up for the event. Kaepernick hasn't played in the league since the 2016 season -- when he first sat during the playing of the anthem. He has said the protest evolved into kneeling after onetime Seattle Seahawk and Green Beret Nate Boyer persuaded him it would be more respectful to the nation's military.

Kaepernick said he kneeled to protest police shootings of black men and other social injustices faced by black people in the United States.

Kaepernick became a free agent in 2017 but no team offered him a contract. He filed a grievance against the NFL, accusing team owners of colluding to keep him from being signed. The NFL denied any collusion and they reached a settlement with Kaepernick and former teammate Eric Reid, who knelt with him.After the November workout, a representative in Kaepernick's camp told CNN he was willing to visit any NFL team facility for the typical interview and workout process.

Kaepernick's team sent video from his workout to all NFL teams with that message, the representative said then.

Jordan Veasy, one of the wide receivers who participated in Kaepernick's workout in Riverdale, was signed this month to the Washington Redskins' practice squad.
Veasy, 24, played at University of California at Berkeley and went undrafted in 2018. He was on the Buffalo Bills practice squad before being released in October.

Triton: Big Streaming Gains For Broadcasters In September.

September brought big jumps in online listening for several radio companies as the end of summer vacations and a return to normal work week schedules got listeners back into their streaming groove. Beasley and Entercom experienced double digit month-over month increases while iHeartRadio, NPR and ESPN saw mid-single digit gains.

In the U.S. primetime Mon.-Fri, 6am-8pm daypart, iHeartRadio remained the top broadcast radio streamer, increasing from 403,125 Average Active Sessions in August to 419,636 in September, a gain of 4%. NPR Member Stations stayed in second place among broadcasters, rising 6% from 84,566 AAS in August to 89,225 in September. Next was Entercom’s Radio.com with an 11% increase, from 74,355 in August to 82,641 in September.

Here are the remainder of broadcast radio’s top 10 and their August-September AAS comparisons: Cumulus Streaming Network (66,619-68,523, up 3%)), Beasley Broadcasting (24,995-27,985, a 12% gain), Univision (26,641-25,389, down 5%), Hubbard Broadcasting (19,460-20,308, up 4%), EMF (19,720-20,020, up 2%) and ESPN Radio (15,540-16,698, up 7%).

Among streaming pureplays across the same daypart, Pandora remained out front with 2.2 million Average Active Sessions in September, down from 2.3 million in August. Spotify is no longer measured by Triton.

Among U.S. sales networks during the primetime Mon.-Fri, 6am-8pm daypart, iHeartMedia Network continued at No. 1 with 1,170,269 AAS, up from 1,111,601 in August.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) is dropping her presidential bid. She informed her staff on Tuesday.

Harris held a call with her team in Iowa on Tuesday, saying that she had made the decision because of financial struggles experienced by the campaign.

“I don’t think anyone on my team was expecting this,” said one staffer, who said they were completely shocked by the news.

Harris will be going to New York City and Baltimore to inform staff there, and she intends to travel to the four early states where she has a campaign presence to be with her team there as well this week.

The Harris campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

The news came just as a super PAC reserved airtime in Iowa for an ad blitz, set to begin on Tuesday, meant to bolster the candidate. Harris’ team had been upfront about its financial issues and had cut staff in New Hampshire in order to double down on the caucus state.
